Searching Cases by Name
Colorado's approved paid statewide electronic search runs through CoCourts/LexisNexis. It usually accepts both a name and a case number. Its live terms, price, and options govern, so check those before relying on it. Treat it as neither free nor a complete image library, and remember that the Summit County daily docket is date-based rather than a broad name search.
- Identify whether the case is state County Court, District Court, or a separate municipal matter.
- Enter the last and first name in the current CoCourts search when broader case history is needed.
- Compare court, case class, filing year, and party role across likely results.
- Open the matching index and record the exact case number.
- Request the ROA or named document from Summit Combined Courts if the result is too thin.
A miss can come from a spelling variation, a suffix, a changed name, a remote restriction, or a court split. No result does not mean no case exists.
Summit County Payment Case Search
The Colorado Judicial payment portal offers another official lookup. It works only for matters eligible for online payment. Search there by case number, ticket number, or name. Pick Summit County, finish the CAPTCHA, and confirm the court and number before you reach any payment step.
| Field | Type | Required | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| County | Dropdown | Yes | Select Summit County. |
| Search method | Radio or dropdown | Yes | Choose case number, ticket number, or name. |
| Search value | Text | Yes | Enter the value that matches the chosen method. |
| CAPTCHA | Challenge | Yes | Complete the anti-automation check. |
| Run case search | Button | Yes | Return eligible cases. |
| Select case | Result control | Yes | Verify the court and number before proceeding. |
The official payment search follows that sequence for eligible Summit County and other Colorado matters. Select a Summit County result. The system then walks through payer information and payment details before authorization. It cannot set up automatic recurring payments. Keep in mind that this is a payment route, not a free index of every Summit County case or filed image. A Summit County case that cannot be paid online may still show up in the daily docket, CoCourts, or the Summit County clerk's records.
Searching by Case Number
A known Summit County case number beats every other search key. It separates parties with similar names. It also points to the right Summit County court class. Colorado's record form offers 2023AA123456 as an example. It identifies C, CV, and S civil classes. Never assume "AA" or any invented sequence is a Summit County-specific format. Copy the number exactly from the notice, ticket, order, or prior result.
Put that Summit County number to work in CoCourts for broader electronic data. Use it in the payment portal when the matter qualifies. Or use it on the Summit County clerk's request form for an ROA and documents. The free Summit County daily docket still demands a date and location first, though you can then match the result by number.
Summit County Court Class Routing
Summit Combined Courts keeps both court levels' files together at one Justice Center, so a docket search for either level starts in the same place. Summit County Court takes the lighter load: misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, protection orders, and civil claims below $25,000. It also handles felony complaints at the early stage. Summit County District Court steps in once a felony transfers, and it owns the higher-value civil cases, domestic relations, probate, juvenile, and mental-health matters on the court docket.
Routing rule: Read the court and case class, not merely the shared Summit County building name.
Town-code and municipal-ticket matters in Summit County stay with the municipal clerk. A county-level search does not replace Breckenridge, Frisco, or the shared Silverthorne/Dillon/Keystone channel.
What a Case Search Returns
A Summit County case search result is an index, nothing more. How deep it goes depends on the channel and public-access rules. A daily setting row may carry nothing but calendar data. An ROA gives a longer chronology. Yet even a full entry title does not guarantee a downloadable filed document.
| Case number | The unique year, class, and sequence used to identify the file. |
|---|---|
| Court and division | Summit County Court or Summit County District Court and the assigned division or judicial officer. |
| Caption and roles | The case style and public party roles. |
| Filed date and status | When the case began and its recorded open, closed, or other status. |
| Case type | Civil, criminal, small claims, traffic, probate, domestic, or another class. |
| Events | Filings, minute orders, settings, continuances, disposition, and later actions. |
| Documents | Entry descriptions, with images available only when remote access permits. |
| Financial data | Public costs or balances where allowed, not a full explanation of the order. |
Summit County Missing Search Result
When a Summit County search fails, test the known number before the name. Then check whether the citation or summons names a municipal court. Frisco warns plainly. A ticket printed with "Summit County Justice Center" is a state citation. Silverthorne, Dillon, and Keystone share a separate municipal forum. Breckenridge keeps its own town docket too.
For a Summit County state case, call 970-453-2272. Ask whether the record is suppressed, old, stored off site, or filed under a different court class. The Summit County clerk can quote the real retrieval cost for an archived file. If a case shows up with no PDF, request the named paper. Do not assume the case is sealed.
Statewide vs County Case Search
No single free public tool in Colorado combines full Summit County history, every document image, daily settings, payment, and certification. The Summit County case search channels split those jobs among themselves. For the ROA, filed papers, and authenticated copies, the Summit County clerk remains the authoritative source.
| Channel | Coverage | Best use | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily docket | Summit settings by date | Find a hearing | Not a full case history |
| CoCourts | Approved statewide electronic data | Name or number search | Paid and subject to remote limits |
| Payment portal | Eligible Colorado cases | Locate and pay a qualifying balance | Eligibility narrows results |
| Summit clerk | County and District Court files | ROA, document, certification | Fees and access rules may apply |
| Municipal clerk | Named town matters | Town ticket or code case | Separate from Combined Courts |
A federal case arising in Summit County sits outside all five state and municipal channels. Begin at the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. From there, use the CM/ECF query route with a PACER login. Or try the national PACER Case Locator when the federal district is unclear.
Federal bankruptcy dockets run on the separate District of Colorado Bankruptcy Court system. Appeals from the federal district go to the Tenth Circuit. CourtListener RECAP may hold donated federal docket material at no cost. But it is incomplete and cannot certify a record.
Summit County ROA Request
When CoCourts leaves gaps, the Record/Document Request Form is the next step. Fill in the exact case number and the Summit County location. Then either check Register of Action/ROA or describe the document you want. Civil filers can request an Order for Judgment, Transcript of Judgment, Satisfaction of Judgment, or Protection Order. Criminal requests cover Disposition/Sentence Order, Protection Order, and Ticket copies.
Hold off on sending any money. The Summit County clerk quotes a price first. The office usually replies within three business days unless something unusual delays it. Without a case number, a $5 Summit County name search may apply. Statewide fee directives also allow charges for copies, certification, archive retrieval, research, and redaction.
Access and Restricted Cases
Public access to court records in Summit County follows Colorado Chief Justice Directive 05-01. That rule shapes what a docket search returns. Juvenile files, sealed cases, suppressed records, protected domestic matters, adoptions, probate, and other confidential material may be left out of a standard Summit County name search. They may also be trimmed to a few details. Redactions can reach further still. Social Security numbers, account data, protected addresses, identifiers for minors, and sensitive health facts may be blacked out. Some may be dropped from remote court records entirely.
A case number alone will not unlock a sealed Summit County file. If the record is suppressed, juvenile, or probate, or if it holds protected material, expect to show U.S. government photo identification on a request form. State who you are and your authority to see the file. The Summit County clerk can release only what the directive, the statute, and the case's own order permit.
Summit County E-Filing Distinction
Colorado Courts E-Filing is a browser-based system for submitting filings. It is not the public Summit County case search. LexisNexis once handled older filings, and those matters were imported into the state e-filing environment. LexisNexis also runs CoCourts, a separate public search tool. Do not treat the products as one and the same because their names sound alike.
An attorney can e-file a Summit County document. Yet that does not mean anyone can download the filed image online. CJD 05-01 governs Summit County access, and CJD 08-02 lets the electronic systems recover costs. When the docket index shows an entry but no public link, ask the Summit County clerk for a copy of the filed image.

The published building hours run Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with one wrinkle to remember. On the first and third Thursday of each month, the clerk counter closes from 4 to 5 p.m. for staff meetings. Call ahead before making the trip. If you need a public terminal or a specific archive service, confirm by phone, since official sources make no promise about terminal locations or extra capabilities.
Summit County Search Verification
Check your work before you trust a Summit County result. Match the case number, the court, the class, the caption, and the newest docket event against the actual filing. A payment screen proves one narrow thing: that the matter fits the payment workflow. It settles nothing else. For that level of detail, the Colorado County Court jurisdiction page shows which Summit County cases belong in county court in the first place.
Use the jurisdiction summary to aim your Summit County docket search in the right direction. Then let the clerk and the case record itself settle what the file actually says. The newest signed Summit County order is the proof of a setting or an outcome. A stale calendar line, a lone balance, or an entry with no image behind it is never a substitute for the source record.
